The economy added 150,00 jobs in October, suggesting a mild slowdown following September’s outsized gain, the Labor Department reported on Friday. Nonfarm payrolls comes in a bit light, downward revisions to previous 2 months and wage growth on the low end. On the margin it feels like it has softened up, but it's still a mighty hot job market,” says Steve Preston, CEO of Goodwill Industries. The Federal Reserve has been looking to the labor market for signs it has reached a better balance between supply and demand than a year ago. Chairman Jerome Powell noted that the labor market has remained strong even as interest rates have risen at a sharp pace over the past year.

Many of the formal speeches delivered before the green stone in the General Assembly could have been performed straight to camera, with few other people in the room (and in 2020, they were). Employers added 187,000 jobs in August, above expectations and in line with a labor market that is rebalancing back to normal, the Labor Department reported on Friday. Other labor market data released this week showed a gradual softening of demand for workers from employers. And private payroll firm ADP’s monthly jobs survey for August found employers added 177,000 jobs in the month, below expectations. “Clearly, the labor market is softening,” says Tony Welch, chief investment officer at Signature FD. The downshift reverses a period of high growth for the labor market coming out of the pandemic.
